Beautiful Monster asked:
I want to start writing novels, not for publishing just for fun. So should I start writing with fan fiction to get the idea of writing and practice for the real thing, or should I just start with original work? I already have an idea for my own writing, but I’m not sure I’m ready. Should I put that work aside and write fan fiction? Or start with original?
Please and thank you!
Thanks
this really helped!

umm. do what you want.
I’m doing the same thing, and honestly, fanfiction is WAY helpful. It’s very comforting when you read people’s reviews on your work, and frankly, it’s excellent practice. I love that website.
I’d recommend it, definitely.
Do the story you talked about and post it on Fan Fiction/
Original Work, just think of something, start typing. Get about one and a half pages typed, then go back and add a lot until its about 7-8 pages.
What do you mean “not ready” lol? If you’re writing just for fun and you’re not worried about being published, there’s no pressure! In fact, my best work was written when I was writing just for myself. But now that I am trying to get my short stories or creative non-fiction pieces published in literary magazines, all I am concerned with are the technical aspects. I obsess way too much, and I wish that I could just sit down and simply write without thinking about possible rejection.
If you would feel more comfortable writing fan fiction first to get the “hang” of writing, go ahead and do so. But let me tell you: Despite what others may think, writing fan fiction is actually more difficult than writing original fiction. With fan fiction everyone already knows the story, and if you focus on a story/series with a major following (such as Twilight), people are going to be a lot more harsh in criticizing your work because they have already become attached to certain characters/scenarios. Also, fan fiction limits you a bit. To be true fan fiction, your story has to follow the same basic plot. If you totally deviate from the plot, it is no longer fan fiction; it is just YOUR story with someone else’s character. In my experience, people are a lot more accepting in reading/critiquing original fiction. I say just go for it and work on your own story!

A lot of writers start out with fan fictions and I know it really helps you start out because you can just write! You also get to explore a lot of different situations and character types. I, however, started with original works because I’ve been writing since around first grade. I just found it easier to make my own story lines, characters, etc.
Its all about what you think you want to do and what you’re ready for. If you feel you need a bit more practice, start with some fan fictions. If you feel you want to branch out and be able to take credit for something you created, then do original stories
good luck!
mine please?

Start writing with whatever you want to write. If you have an idea for original fiction, write that. If you have an idea for fanfic, write that.
If you feel like your original fiction idea is simply too big for you to start on right now, then see if you can think of something related – a story from your character’s childhood, for instance, or maybe the tale of something which happens off-camera in your main story.
